What are Subluxations ?
In simplest terms, a subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral Subluxation) occurs when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and creates pressure on, or irritates spinal nerves.
|
Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each pair of bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves can cause those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. The purpose of the nervous system is to control and coordinate the function of every system, organ, tissue and cell in the body, thus maintaining a 100% state of health and wellbeing. The nervous system is responsible for sending messages to and from your brain, keeping communication open between the "boss" (your brain) and all of the workers (your body and its systems). | |
|
A subluxation can alter or prevent the flow of impulses from the brain to the rest of your body. Over a period of time, vertebral subluxation can cause "dis-ease," or lack of health because it prevents your body and its various systems (nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, immune, etc.) from performing at their highest potential. |
 | |
A subluxation is a stress response. Muscles go into spasm. Spinal bones lock up and get stuck. Adjacent nerves are choked or impinged upon thus becomming disturbed. This interferes with the control and regulation of your body. This garbles communications between the brain and parts of your body.Disturbed nerve function is an underlying cause of many health problems beyond headaches and back pain. |
|
Some of the effects of spinal mis-alignment are listed below. The bones in the table are from the top of your spine to the bottom. Chiropractors correct these mis-alignments or Vertebral Subluxations by delivering a safe, gentle and specific force known as a chiropractic adjustment. |

Only a chiropractic examination can detect subluxations. And only chiropractic adjustments can reduce their effect to your nervous system, naturally. |
How can I tell If I have a vertebral subluxation? |
The only accurate way to determine if you suffer from subluxations is to receive a chiropractic evaluation. However, a number of signs and symptoms are commonly associated with the vertebral subluxation and include:
|
- neck pain, tenderness, soreness or stiffness
-
back pain, tenderness, soreness or stiffness
-
headaches
-
dizziness or balance problems
-
spinal muscle spasm, tightness or weakness
-
reduced spinal mobility
-
pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities
-
joint pain and stiffness
-
low energy
-
poor overall state of health
-
poor tissue healing
|
| Individuals who are not currently experiencing pain or discomfort are not necessarily "subluxation free". As previously described, pain is a very poor indicator of disease processes, including the presence of subluxations. Subluxations are similar to cavities in that many times a significant amount of damage is present before symptoms such as pain are felt.
| This is why we recommend, that individuals seek periodic spinal evaluations to check for the presence of subluxations and other spinal abnormalities, even in the absence of symptoms. The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of any subluxations you may have. | Contact our practice today to find out if you have subluxations before they become more serious and more difficult to correct.
|
How can subluxations be corrected?
|
| The primary form of care to reduce subluxations is a series of chiropractic adjustments. By applying a specific and precise force, changes in the positions and motions of the spinal bones can be achieved over time.
